I received a message from Google today (July 17, 2026) that said:
"Effective in 45 days, ALL DATA included in your Android device backups. In addition to Photos and videos in Google Photos and MMS data that already count toward your Google Account storage, things that will ALSO count towards your Google storage will include SMS (text) messages, Call history, device settings, and app settings."
According to the linked Yahoo article, "what types of files get backed up in an Android backup in the past. And while it doesn't include everything, it does grab a huge chunk of data from your device like App Data, call history, contact information, device settings, SMS and MMS data, Google account information and more."
I asked CHATGPT for a list of apps and settings that might now count towards your Google storage quota. Here's what it said:
What else will count?
⬆️Wi-Fi network names and passwords
⬆️Wallpaper preferences
⬆️Display settings (brightness, font size, dark mode)
⬆️Language and input settings
⬆️Accessibility settings
⬆️Bluetooth pairings (on supported devices)
⬆️Do Not Disturb and notification preferences
⬆️App preferences (such as settings within an app)
⬆️Game progress (if not stored separately by the game)

Google claims these items will only require minimal additional storage, but I find that hard to believe. I recommend we clean up our devices and cloud storage before the new policy goes into effect.
